Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro: unboxing and first impressions
Good; so our Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro just arrived as GearBest promised – we have to thank them for this new review opportunity in that regard. Thus we’re ready to share our first impressions with you in terms of shipping package, the accessories included and the overall first-day user experience with this new Android 8.1 Oreo based mid-range smartphone.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is an upgraded version of the recently released Note 5 Pro and Note 5 Pro AI Dual Camera edition devices: it introduces a larger display and keeps the same Snapdragon 636 processor as the Note 5 Pro and it comes with the same main rear camera from the Note 5 Pro AI Dual Camera edition while the selfie camera records a boost in performance thanks to the new 20MP + 2MP AI Portrait dual camera combination.
So, where should we place the Note 6 Pro? It’s quite hard to find a reliable shelf for this new phone as Xiaomi plays with its Note versions apparently without a real logic. For now, let’s say that the Note 6 Pro is the improved Note 5 Pro AI Dual Camera edition, though the improvements are not that notable as we will observe during the following lines.

Unboxing the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro
Design and materials used
Our Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro model was delivered in an orange box. The package is quite standard, there are no premium features to impress here – after all, we’re discussing about a budget-friendly Android-powered smartphone. Anyway, inside the box we find our phone, the charger and the USB (regular, not type C) cable along with a bonus transparent soft-silicone case. We have the blue model of the Note 6 Pro, which we must say looks well enough for a mix of plastic and aluminum materials.
The device feels premium, but you won’t get the same cool glass impression when holding the Note 6 Pro in your hands. Of course, you gain some extra grip and you lose the fingerprint magnet problem especially if you don’t want to equip your handset with extra protection – the metal back isn’t shiny and from our perspective the matte blue black option was the perfect choice in this case.
Display ports and measurements
On the front we have a large 6.26 (notched) full screen display with 19:9 aspect ratio (2280×1080 IPS LCD, 403 PPI). The screen is the most important improvement compared with both the Note 5 Pro and Note 5 Pro AI Dual Camera edition as it ensures tinier bezels and bigger pixel count and screen-to-body ration. The display is of course protected by Gorilla Glass.
On top of the screen we have the new dual selfie cameras: the main 20MP one and the second 2MP shooter used as a depth sensor for better portraits. There is also a notification LED which, unfortunately, is showing only the white color.
On the back we already discussed about the matte blue aluminum case. Well, we must also specify here the rear AI dual cameras, a set up borrowed from the Note 5 Dual AI Camera handset. There is a small camera bump, so on a flat surface your phone will tremble a little bit. For those interested, the audio jack is still present as well as a second SIM port (or a memory card slot alternative if you prefer it over the second SIM capability) and the IR blaster.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is ergonomic and feels good in your hand. It measures 157.9 x 76.4 x 8.2 mm so it’s the same as what we noticed on the Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera Device with one observation: the Note 6 equips a larger screen on the same body, which is just great especially for those who want to upgrade from a previous Redmi Note model.
On the bottom we have the speaker / microphone and the microUSB port – yes, this is maybe one of the major downside when it comes to the Note 6 Pro: the lack of USB type C in late 2018.

Our first impression is not bad. For a low price you get a compact device with some great features. Of course, there are a few downsides to consider, but if you are on a budget we think that the Redmi Note 6 Pro should be on your short list and definitely one of the best choice you can make.
