When you think of navigation apps, I bet that there is especially one name popping out in your mind: the mighty Google Maps. Even if this is indeed one of the most popular and reliable apps from the category, don’t you imagine that it’s the only one out there. If you’re not too keen on Google Maps or you simply feel that it’s time to try out something different, trust me when I say that there are plenty of other options to choose from.

One app that’s worth checking out is none other than OsmAnd. As you can imagine, here I’m presenting you a full GPS application that offers turn-by-turn directions, but what happens if you don’t have a data connection? Well, let me tell you that this app also provides an offline point-of-interest database, so there is no reason to worry about as long as it works both online and offline with no roaming charges when you are abroad.

With OsmAnd you can safely travel abroad, using a Wi-Fi-only Android tablet, or you can simply use less data on your phone, but still getting all the navigation directions that you need. And trust me that any error is out of the question.

Well, OSM Automated Navigation Directions is a map and navigation application that uses the high-quality OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. Of course, you’ll need to download the map files to your device when you first use the app. And another very important aspect is that the free version gives you the possibility to download ten map files for free, which should be more than enough for most people.

OsmAnd lets you to navigate to locations by address or by searching a point-of-interest database. And don’t forget that it will also speak turn-by-turn directions to you so you can follow them while driving, just as you could with a dedicated GPS unit, not to mention the automatic re-routing whenever you deviate from the route or the optional lane guidance, street name display, and estimated time of arrival.

And before hitting the download link, let me tell you one more thing: OsmAnd isn’t just for driving, but also comes with other options for walking, biking, as well as some public transit directions.

Head to this link to download the app.
