5.68-Inch Foldable Display Revealed at the CES 2014 behind Closed Doors
At the CES 2014, Samsung had to demonstrate that still remains the dominant smartphone company in the entire world, especially after managing to sell more than 10 million devices in just 60 days. After teaming-up with the German luxury car manufacturer BMW to equip the i3 electric car with Samsung Galaxy Gear BMWi3, the Korean smartphone maker was reportedly to have shown a foldable 5.68-inch display behind closed doors at the CES 2014. Some industry sources managed to show the first foldable display. And now we got it too…the info, of course… It is said that the device is radically different than all the other flexible displays from the market.
According to the Korean ETnews, the one source responsible with the revealing of the device, the foldable display measures 5.68-inches and is a member of the AMOLED big family. The AMOLED is made of a film-like polyamide substrate to make folding possible.
The device also enhances a touchscreen panel which is placed on top, for a smoother interaction on touching. Since flexible displays use an indium tin oxide (ITO) as a common thing, Samsung decided to use a single layer metal mesh technology which was especially designed for this use.
As our source states, the mesh panels have nothing to do with Indium usage, since it is quite expensive and will make smartphone much more expensive.
Samsung announced its intention on coming on the market with a foldable display late last year.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait until 2015 to benefit these devices, as for now, they are created just for demonstrations and shows, but who knows, if things go the right directions, they might be rolling out sooner than expected.
Boom!
