Firefox OS in Spain, will it be able to compete with Android?

While Android already owns 70% of the market share worldwide, Firefox OS is just about to be released in Spain, today, July 2, along with the ZTE Open, the first device to run the Firefox OS. The phone’s price tag is 90$, but 39$ of it represent prepaid airtime, so this means that it’s a 51$ smartphone. Android is very strong in Europe so we don’t know if Firefox OS is going to become a real competitor, if it doesn’t come up with some really great apps. And at the moment, the Firefox Marketplace holds 1,146 apps for the ZTE Open, including Facebook, Twitter, clocks, calculators and many more.

However, if we’re comparing the two mobile operating systems, Android’s Google Play holds 700.000 apps up to this point, so Firefox needs to get their asses together and keep working on that. And we hope they do so, because we agree with our source on the fact that it’s not ok for Android to be the only choice and right now, we could say it is, with all its cheap smartphones and devices. We believe that all Mozilla needs is a small discovery that will make it the best mobile operating system because, personally, I find the Mozilla Firefox the best web browser nowadays.
