Use Holey Light for Camera Cutout LED Effect on your Galaxy S10E
Notification LEDs have been an integral part of Samsung devices for years. Android fans might not remember a time before these lights, and for good reason. The lack of a Notification LED was disappointing on your Galaxy S10E, but don’t be upset. Holey Light animates the display area immediately surrounding the camera cut-out as a replacement for the missing notification LED.
To be more precise, it lights up the area only if the notification would have otherwise triggered the non-existent LED to light up. The app is limited to only the three Samsung flagships, so do not say that you have not been warned. It will simply crash if you try to use it on other devices with a punch-hole display or camera cutout. I also like that it is completely free and without ads, and is open-source as well (and licensed under the GPL v3).
There are disadvantages too
The app is limited in functionality though, most likely partially because of the limits Android imposes. The light will never appear on the lock screen, since apps are blocked from drawing on top of the lock screen. The app works when the screen is on, and when the screen is off and charging. The app sometimes fakes the screen being off, so there may be oddities that appear from time to time.
And Holey Light does not currently work when the screen is off and the phone is unplugged. This is happening since the app in its current state would keep the device awake to emulate the LED. This is enough of a power draw to drain the battery on your device. The developer Chainfire is exploring solutions to this, but since this requires extensive testing, you may have to wait for a while.
Until then, you know what you have to do. Holey Light is free on the Play Store, and Chainfire says it should work on all S10 devices, including the S10E one. The app is limited to only the three Samsung flagships from the S10 line, so note that it will crash if you try to use it on other devices with a punch-hole display or camera cutout.
Use Holey Light for camera cutout LED effect on your Galaxy S10E:
- First of all, download and install Holey from the Google Play Store;
- After you’re done downloading, install it;
- You may now allow access for the necessary permissions it will ask you for. Then we move on to the next step which is the actual setup;
- You would have the option to select from three different animation styles: Swirl — Blink — Unholy Light. You would also see the battery usage percentage for each animation;
- Then, you may tap on either one of the animation styles and that’s it;
- You can now see the animation around your device’s camera cutout.
It’s OK to later change your mind. To turn off the effect, toggle off the Holey Light function using the toggle present on the top right corner of the application.
